HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION

The Historic Preservation Commission, a seven-member volunteer board appointed by the City, was established by the City of Oxford on May 8, 2007. A majority of the members have demonstrated a special interest, experience or education in history, architecture, archeology or related subjects and all members are residents of the town of Oxford.

The City of Oxford established two historic districts, College Street District and the Main Street District, on March 18, 2008. The Oxford Historic Preservation Commission is responsible for reviewing proposed exterior changes to structures within these two historic districts to ensure renovations or changes are appropriate to the style and era of their architecture. Homeowners in the historic districts received a summary of the design guidelines in May 2008 to explain what items the Commission is concerned about and to provide guidelines for the preparation of applications for certificate of appropriateness.

The Commission meets quarterly on the third Thursday at 6 pm at City Hall during the months of January, April, July and October and more frequently if required.
