Government

The City of Oxford serves approximately 9,000 people who live, work, and play in our Historic ◊ Walkable ◊ Friendly City. The City operates under the Council-Manager Form of Government and is governed by a seven-member Board of Commissioners elected by the public.

The Mayor is the Chief Executive Officer of the City of Oxford and presides at all meetings of the Board of Commissioners.  He/She executes documents and performs other acts relating to the City of Oxford which are necessary and incidental to the proper maintenance of good government, upon the proper authority of the Board of Commissioners.  He/She does not have a vote upon any matters coming before the Board of Commissioners except in case of a tie.  In the absence or disability of the Mayor, the Mayor Pro Tem shall perform his/her duties.

The Board of Commissioners of the City of Oxford is the governing body and has the power to make ordinances, rules, and regulations for the better government of the city as authorized in and under Chapter 160A of the North Carolina General Statutes and its amendments, and may enforce such rules, regulations, and ordinances, by imposing penalties; and also make and provide for the execution of such ordinances, rules, and regulations for the better government of the City of Oxford as they deem necessary; provided, however, that such ordinances, rules, and regulations are not inconsistent with the Oxford City Charter.
