With the youngsters settled back in school, we know Autumn is just around the corner. With thetemperatures in the high 80s and low 90s, summer is still trying to make one last stand. Meanwhile the Oxford Farmers Market is running wide open with the very best fresh produce, meats, crafts, and baked goods. It is the place to be every Wednesday and Saturday morning. Our hours are every Wednesday from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. until noon or until sold out.

Fresh for your breakfast table, we have free range eggs and pasture raised pork along with our enormous selection of jams, jellies, and breads. In the jam and jelly line we have: pear, damson, fig, pineapple cherry, strawberry, grape, tomato, blueberry, blackberry, orange marmalade, hot pepper, and peach, just to name a few. We also have pecans, peppers and tomatoes to turn those eggs into omelets for a special treat. You’ll also find other pork products such as ribs, roasts, and chops, along with chicken.
Our veggie lineup includes: purple hull peas, butterbeans, stringbeans, tomatoes, okra, potatoes, cantaloupes, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, red, green, banana, jalapeno, cayenne and bell peppers. Market goers this week had shelled butterbeans and snapped stringbeans already in the bags to take home and place in the pot.
Don’t forget the salsas, pickles, and chow chow to enhance your meals. We have one vendor who has really dug deep into grandma’s recipe book to resurrect some pickles and jams from the past. With the figs in abundance, she has made fig, strawberry fig, and orange fig preserves. The pickle line includes fig, squash, watermelon rind, pear, peach, bread and butter, sweet pickle strips, and dill pickles.
Our bakery is running full steam ahead with items for those church homecomings and family reunions. We have a variety of cookies, pies, an assortment of fresh baked breads, cakes and Lois’ famous fried apple, and peach pies. She also brought out the cherry fried pies last week, which is my personal favorite.
Our craft section is gearing up for the holidays with gifts for any occasion or things to enhance your home décor. We have wooden recipe holders, various aprons for adults and children, pillows, placemat and napkin sets, potholders, bun warmers, crocheted dishcloths and towels, Addie’s famous college pocket books, flower arrangements and many other items.
With many unadvertised items not listed here, there are always surprises awaiting you each week. You never know what treasure you may find, so be sure to set the clock to get up early so you can meet your friends at the Oxford Farmers Market.
