Downtown Master Plan

In 2015, the City of Oxford and the Downtown Oxford Economic Development Corporation (DOEDC) dedicated resources for the creation of a Downtown Master Plan. After a lengthy process of studying the existing conditions, assets, needs of the downtown area, and holding public workshops for citizen input, the Downtown Master Plan was finished and adopted in March of 2016.

The preparation of the master plan represents a pivotal turning point for managing growth in Downtown Oxford and will set the pace for a new era of planning for the economic revitalization of the Downtown District.  The new plan provides a framework that can help to guide development in our community. The change will, indeed, happen Downtown and this plan will enable our community to guide that change, rather than simply react to it. The Downtown Master Plan encompasses components that range from recommendations for marketing and special activities to streetscape and traffic improvements.

Now that the Plan has been adopted, the next steps toward implementation of the Plan include: creating partnerships with local stakeholders and the private sector to leverage finances; seeking additional revenue sources that will allow the incorporation of recommendations into budgets, work programs, and other policies and initiatives; and coordinating with other agencies such as NCDOT and Duke Energy to combine projects and maximize funds.

It is the shared goal of the City and the Downtown Oxford Economic Development Corporation to improve the quality of life for the residents in Oxford, create jobs and economic development in Downtown, create important gathering places for visitors, residents, and workers in Downtown, and cultivate a walkable and vibrant Downtown with several areas of interest and activity from morning to evening!
